Sooraj Barjatya was born in Mumbai. His family is Marwari Jain. Grandpa asked him to make his first movie, Maine Pyar Kiya, for Rajshri when he was only 24 years old. In 1986, he married Vineeta Barjatya, and the two of them now have three children.

His first movie as a director was Maine Pyar Kiya, which came out in 1989 and starred Salman Khan. It was the start of both of their careers. In 1994, he was in the hit movie Hum Aapke Hain Kaun with Salman, and they worked together again in 1999 for the movie Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United.
His fourth movie, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, with Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, and Abhishek Bachchan, was the first one to lose money.
